When Plans Change: How Professional Excavators Keep Projects Moving Forward
Double B Excavations & Grade LLC
This Morning Didn’t Go as Planned
BUT FLEXIBILITY IS BUILT INTO OUR FOUNDATION
In the excavation business, no two days are exactly the same.
Take this morning, for example - we woke up planning to be in Utica, but here we are in Hanover instead.
That's just part of the job, and being ready to adapt is what separates professional operators from the rest.
Some folks might get frustrated when plans change, but we've learned over the years that flexibility isn't just helpful - it's essential.
Every successful excavation company needs to be ready to shift gears when suppliers, weather, or other factors throw a curveball your way.
The real trick is turning those schedule changes into opportunities rather than setbacks.
Welcome to Double B!
The Changed Schedule Scenario
Today's schedule shift came down to stone delivery timing. We had a project lined up in Utica, but couldn't get on the stone supplier's schedule as quickly as we needed. Instead of letting that slow us down, we immediately switched to our backup plan - tackling two smaller projects in Hanover and Granville that we knew needed attention.
This kind of quick pivot actually works out well for everyone involved. Our Utica clients are away camping until Sunday anyway, so moving their project to Thursday means they'll still come home to exactly what they wanted. Meanwhile, we're able to keep our crew working and get two other properties taken care of. It's about making the most of every working day, even when things don't go according to the original plan.
Managing Multiple Smaller Projects
Let me walk you through how we handle days like this. In Hanover, we're looking at about an hour of grading work - it's not a huge job, but it's important to get it right. After the grading, we'll bring in our hydroseed equipment to lay down grass seed. These might be smaller projects, but they still deserve our full attention.
That's one thing I've learned over years in this business: don't underestimate these quick turnaround jobs. While they might not be as flashy as bigger projects, they're just as important to the homeowners who trust us with their property. Plus, having these smaller jobs ready to go means we can fill schedule gaps efficiently and keep our crews productive.
Why This Approach Works
Here's something that might surprise you: being able to shift between big and small projects actually makes us better at both. When stone delivery schedules change (like they did today), or weather throws us a curve ball, having flexible scheduling means we don't have to disappoint anyone or waste a workday.
Think about it this way - instead of telling three different clients "sorry, we can't make it," we're able to tell them exactly when we'll be there and stick to it. The Utica project moves to Thursday when we know we can get our stone delivery. The Hanover and Granville properties get taken care of today. And because we planned ahead, the Utica homeowners won't even notice the schedule change since they're enjoying their camping trip.
This isn't just about keeping busy - it's about being reliable. When you're dealing with multiple properties, suppliers, and weather conditions, being able to adapt while keeping everyone informed is what sets professional operations apart from the rest.
Professional Planning Strategies
The secret to making all this work isn't really a secret at all - it's just good planning. We keep a running list of smaller projects that can fill unexpected schedule gaps. This means staying in regular contact with our clients, understanding their timelines, and knowing which jobs can be flexible and which ones can't.
Take today's situation: we knew the Utica homeowners would be camping until Sunday, so moving their project to Thursday wouldn't cause any problems. We also knew the Hanover and Granville sites were ready for us whenever we could fit them in. Having this kind of information helps us make smart decisions when plans change.
Closing
At the end of the day, excavation work is about more than just moving dirt. It's about managing relationships, schedules, and resources in a way that keeps projects moving forward, even when things don't go exactly as planned. Sometimes that means adapting on the fly, but with the right approach, everyone still gets exactly what they need.
Looking Forward
If you're planning any kind of excavation work in central Ohio, remember that flexibility can actually be a good thing. While we always aim to stick to our original schedule, having the ability to adapt means we can handle whatever challenges come up without sacrificing quality or leaving anyone hanging.
Need to discuss your project timeline? We're always happy to talk through options and create a plan that works for everyone involved. Because in this business, it's not just about having the right equipment - it's about having the right approach.
